computer start up question

i am trying to figure out how to stop a program that automatically starts when windows XP starts up...where do i find the option that lets me select what programs load once windows xp loads....my computer is to slow as 10 or so programs try to laod at once (messangers etc)....i want to deselect the auto option for programs to start...i know i can go through each program and change the preferences once i am logged on....i was just trying to simplify the process.....thanks for your help in advance

I doubt you can solve the slowliness this way but what you are looking for is this:
1. click Start button
2. select Run
3. type in
msconfig
and click OK

after you do all that, you have to click on startup

it will show you all the programs that start when you log on

then you can uncheck the ones you want to stop
